Calling all doodlers! This October, the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is participating in The Big Draw, an international drawing festival that celebrates drawing in all its forms. Now in its fifteenth year, the Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of participants from all over the world, giving everyone a chance make art and connect with their community. The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is proud to be the only official Big Draw partner in the state of Maine this year.
To celebrate, we’ve scheduled a ton of fun, interactive drawing and art workshops and classes. We’re also welcoming three fantastic guest artists to our Artists in Residence Program during The Big Draw. Look for Johanna, Faith, and Emmeline as they create interactive, large scale works of art created by YOU! Children and families are encouraged to work together to create a seascape mural with Johanna, constellation art with Faith, and art based on your favorite things with Emmeline.
Other Big Draw workshops include: Draw a Song, Movement Portraits, Nature Drawing, Alphabet Art, Story Book Creations, Movement Portraits and More.
For details on all of our special programs and workshops, check out our calendar of events all through October to go with the Big Draw!
If you miss the workshops and programs, visit us on November 6 for First Friday and view the finished projects during a special Museum & Theatre Big Draw gallery show. Museum admission is just $2 from 5-8pm on First Friday.

Audiences may not realize Matt Heaton’s children’s music is “children’s music!” First and foremost, it is groovy, engaging and fun. Playing with skill and whimsy on guitar & banjo, Matt brings in elements of rockabilly, folk, soul and surf to entertain adults as well as kids. With shockingly listenable versions of classics like “Wheels on the Bus” alongside original compositions like “Outside Toy,” Matt’s shows are a high energy explosion of all ages enjoyment and education. Warning: Singing along may take place!
Heaton is a skilled entertainer for kids, with a repertoire of kid-friendly folk & surf-inspired originals and reworked classics. Like musicians before him, he took a keen interest in music for kids after the birth of his son, leading engaging sing-alongs that he hoped adults could enjoy, too. Armed with a bundle of new and traditional material, he organized a whole lot of extra babysitting and created his new CD, “Happy You Made It.” Matt Heaton also performs in the well-known Irish music duo of Matt & Shannon Heaton.
$5 per person plus admission. For tickets call 828-1234 x231 or stop by the front desk.
Well, Congress Street to be more exact!
Last week, our talented troupe of young actors took their show down the street to our neighbors at the Portland Public Library, to give them their own taste of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Enjoy these awesome photos (thanks PPL!) and please check out one of our remaining performances of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” running until Feb.22.
This weekend is filled with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory activities as we get ready for the show: D.I.Y. candy-necklace-making, bubble gum blowing competitions, candy art projects, and Wonka-land’s famous chocolate river milk!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory runs February 13th-22nd – come back and join us for the show!
Tickets go on sale January 23rd!
Celebrate the chilly season with a weekend of winter wonder! Build mini ice sculptures, explore the science of snow and glaciers, create winter crafts, and join us outside for a cozy hot chocolate and wintertime fort building.
Families of a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are invited to the Museum for a special, private playtime. The Museum will be closed to the general public, providing a more conducive play environment. Our staff has made adjustments to the lighting in our exhibit and play areas, and noise-reducing headphones will be available. Play Our Way is free, and pre-registration is not required – just come over for as little or as long as you like!
The Play Our Way monthly playtimes will continue through February 2015 thanks to the support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine.
For more information about this program, contact Louisa Donelson at Louisa@kitetails.org or call 828-1234 x227
Saturday, February 7th Play Our Way runs 8-10am.
